My Submission for The Tomie dePaola Award!

So today I finished my illustrations for the Tomie dePaola Award.

The assignment was to illustrate a moment from a passage that they provided from Philip Pullman’s version of “Little Red Riding Hood” from FAIRY TALES FROM THE BROTHERS GRIMM (Viking, 2012).

Re designing the main character (Little Red Riding Hood), we have to make him fall in love with the character, make him want to meet her.

So I imagine what my character would be and I thought of a super happy little girl that loves nature and animals, very naive. This is what I did in the sketch but once I added color I wanted to make her a flower collector, she is a flower lover! so while she is heading to her grandmothers house she is picking flowers and once she meets the "Big Bad Wolf" she offers him one. With her offering him a flower I want to make her more innocent, she is not judging him because of him being a Wolf or having that malicious smile.
